4th Clean Coal Day International Symposium in Tokyo this September
On 4 September 2025, the 34th Clean Coal Day International Symposium, organised by the Japan Carbon Frontier Organization (JCOAL), will take place in Tokyo. The following day, 5 September, will feature the Energy Security with Decarbonization Symposium 2025, held in conjunction with the celebrations of International Clean Coal Day. For many years, the symposium has served as an important platform for exchanging knowledge on the role of coal in the energy sector and on ways to reduce emissions in industries where a complete phase-out of this fuel in the short term remains challenging.
The theme of this year’s edition — “Decarbonization and Realistic Energy Transition” — focuses on finding solutions that enable both the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the maintenance of secure energy supplies. The programme includes sessions discussing technological progress in the capture, utilisation and storage of CO₂, as well as opportunities for its reuse in industrial processes. Other topics will address the integration of renewable energy into existing energy infrastructure, which is crucial for the stability of power systems as the share of renewables increases. A significant part of the event will be dedicated to case studies presenting the experiences of various countries, both developed and developing, enabling a comparison of different transition pathways. The role of international cooperation in accelerating the implementation of new technological solutions will also be discussed.
On the first day of the conference, Paweł Gładysz, President of the Board of CCUS Association Poland, will deliver a presentation entitled “Poland's Energy Policy Developments for Coal, CCUS/Decarbonization, etc.”, scheduled for 11:30–11:45 JST. His address will provide an overview of Poland’s energy policy in the areas of coal and CCUS technologies, and discuss their importance in the context of long-term decarbonisation goals. Additional features of the event will facilitate participant interaction, including bilateral meetings, a real-time voting system during sessions, and the publication of the JCOAL 2025 e-book, showcasing initiatives related to carbon neutrality.
